Frequently Asked Questions
By default, the annual salary is calculated by multiplying the hourly wage by the number of work hours per day, work days per week, and work weeks per year. For a standard full-time employee working 8 hours/day, 5 days/week (40 hours/week) for 52 weeks, the multiplier is 2,080 hours. (e.g. $25/hour x 2,080 hours = $52,000/year). You can easily customize these hours in the settings above.
Gross pay is the total amount of money earned before any taxes, social security, pension contributions, or health insurance deductions are subtracted. Net pay (often called take-home pay) is the actual cash amount credited to your bank account after all municipal/federal taxes and insurance premiums are subtracted from the gross amount.
Overtime pay is compensation for hours worked beyond the agreed standard full-time hours (commonly over 8 hours a day or 40 hours a week). The calculation uses the hourly base rate, multiplies it by the overtime multiplier (typically 1.5x for time-and-a-half or 2x for double time) and active overtime hours. Total pay adds this overtime total, regular hours total, and any annual bonus together.
Paid time off (PTO) and holidays are paid out at your standard rate, meaning your annual earnings remain unchanged. However, if you take unpaid vacation or leave, you should reduce the number of 'working weeks' in the custom inputs. For example, if you take 4 weeks of unpaid vacation, configure 'Weeks / Year' to 48.
Typical deductions include income tax (national/federal, state, and local), social security contributions, retirement/pension plans (such as 401k or company match schemes), health/life insurance premiums, and occasionally union fees. Our tool allows custom tax and deduction rates to easily model your specific take-home pay situation.
Simply toggle to the 'Offer Comparer' tab. Enter the salary rates (whether hourly, weekly, monthly, or yearly), hours worked per week, and the dollar value of the benefits package (e.g., insurance subsidies, equity bonuses, or gym memberships) for both Offer A and Offer B. The tool converts both options into gross annual packages and provides a clear breakdown of the financial winner.
